The facts

What Indianapolis Democrats just passed.

On August 10, the Democratic-majority City-County Council voted 17-7 to override Mayor Joe Hogsett's veto and enact the tax hike.

What exactly is going up?

The annual Marion County excise surtax for most cars, SUVs, light trucks and motorcycles will become a flat $100 per vehicle. The annual wheel tax for RVs, trailers, buses, heavy trucks, tractors and semitrailers will become a flat $240 per vehicle.

When does the increase begin?

The new rates begin January 1, 2027 and are paid when a vehicle registered in Marion County is renewed. The ordinance does not include an automatic sunset, so the annual charge continues unless it is later changed or repealed.

How does the calculator determine what I pay now?

For personal vehicles, Marion County currently charges 10% of the state vehicle excise tax, with a $7.50 minimum. The state amount is based on the vehicle's age and original retail price. This calculator applies that official schedule using the vehicle's 2026 age. For an exact comparison, switch to “Use my BMV receipt” and enter the line labeled “County Vehicle Excise Tax.”

Why do some people call this a 400% increase?

News reports commonly use about $20 as the current average. A jump from $20 to $100 is an $80 increase, or 400%. But many owners now pay the $7.50 minimum. Their bill rises by $92.50, which is a 1,233% increase. Your percentage depends on your current local tax, so the calculator shows your household's own number.

Is this my entire BMV registration bill?

No. This is only the Marion County vehicle excise surtax or wheel tax. State excise taxes, registration fees, specialty plate charges and other applicable fees remain separate. The new local charge is added to those costs.

Why did the Council pass it?

Council Democrats said the tax provides a permanent source of local road revenue and helps secure a $50 million state road match. Mayor Hogsett presented an alternative $50 million funding package using other revenue sources, and Council Republicans urged the city to find savings instead. The Council chose the tax and overrode the veto.

Who approved the tax hike?

The Democratic-majority Indianapolis City-County Council. The original ordinance passed 14-10, with all six Republicans voting no. The Council then overrode Democratic Mayor Joe Hogsett's veto by a 17-7 vote on August 10, 2026.
